Subject: mediation From: "Marty Durlin" Date: Mon, April 10, 2006 13:09 To: board at krfcfm.org beth at krfcfm.org bame at riverrock.org porkchop at verinet.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Greg and KRFC board, Beth, Paul and Eddie, Although none of you have spoken to me about the situation at KRFC, I have heard from several other folks that there is a division in the community, and I write to offer my services as a mediator. Over the 19 years I've served as KGNU station manager, I've taken three mediation courses, and I've done a fair amount of mediation within KGNU and the community radio world. I serve on the KGNU board, and I have chaired the HCCRC, NFCB and Pacifica boards. I began my radio career as a volunteer. Thus I am familiar with the tugs and pulls of each group within a community station: management, board and volunteers. I have a long history in community radio stretching back to the early 1970s, and I can tell you that the struggle you are currently undergoing is not unusual, especially about three years into broadcasting. That said, your situation is unique to the Fort Collins community and the personalities involved, and I believe it is a threat to KRFC. If the conflict goes public, it will hurt the station as a whole. So I hope you will consider mediation, even if I am not your choice for mediator. Once lawyers and other media are involved, the chance for resolving the conflict amicably, or at least with a minimum of damage, are greatly diminished. I am willing to do this for a small honorarium, or even for free, depending on the amount of time it entails. Finally, let me say that my motive is simply to help KRFC. I don't have all the answers, but I feel my experience and commitment may be of assistance.
