Feb/Mar 2006:
As part of the
strategic planning process KRFC's board of directors
proposed to change
the mission statement and split it into
three parts: mission, vision, and values.
Modifying the KRFC mission statment
was treated as a very important and grave
matter by the station founders,
who designed a checks-and-balances process to protect it.
Some KRFC members were concerned that the proposed new mission
omits important ingredients from the original mission,
and that the proposed new mission ignored public, member, and volunteer input.
Under KRFC Bylaws Article XI,
members have the right to petition for a vote by the full membership.
(The petition was denied on a technicality)
To help people make an informed decision,
the original mission,
the proposed new mission, vision, and values,
compared with
the member and public input,
was made available to potential signers below.
KRFC Fort Collins is
a locally owned, independent, community, noncommercial radio station that
is listener supported and democratically managed. KRFC
offers a channel for community building and cultural enrichment in Fort
Collins and beyond. Volunteers and staff will provide creative programming
and service by:
- Focusing on our community. Through radio excellence we will create
a unique community resource, one that promotes connections and fosters
a sense of belonging. We will maintain a local focus for sharing music,
arts, culture, news and opinions. We will serve the people of our community
by providing outlets for their creative skills and energies.
- Serving the interests of a diverse group of listeners. KRFC seeks
to entertain, stimulate and challenge listeners with wide-ranging music
programming, local news, issues and public affairs.
- Striving to be a forum for many voices, by providing an outlet for
the expression of a wide spectrum of ideas; targeting those typically
lacking media access.
KRFC is committed to
respect for personal dignity. While debate is a necessary and healthy
part of the discourse in broadcasting and station management, bigotry
and personal attacks will not be tolerated.

- Valuing equality without distinctions regarding race, age, language, ethnic, group, culture, religion,
disability, sexual orientation or gender identity (add immigration status?)
On the air, we:
- Entertain and educate the listener while challenging their assumptions through unique and diverse
programming
- Value a mix of music, culture and public affairs
- Emphasize local affairs, events and people that ground us in the community
- Carefully select non-local originated programming which helps us live among communities beyond our
borders. We are global citizens
- Strive for programming excellence in both content and technique
In our day-to-day operations, we:
- Welcome participation from anyone in our community, making special effort to include those people and
views typically missing from mainstream media
- Invite affected stakeholders to help make decisions which affect them
- Strive to meet concerns of affected stakeholders in decision making
- Value open, clear, accountable processes and communication
- Welcome the support of local businesses and government agencies while maintaining philosophic and
program independence

KRFC
- Engage listeners in dialogue about local and global music, and issues which encourage thought, debate
and enable community improvement
- Foster community by sponsoring events on and off-the-air, bringing individuals, community members
and other nonprofits together
|
| Feb 11 - Suggestion from Public Meeting |
- Serve the community; be the community
- Respect internal values of each sub culture within the station/community culture
- Goal of being entirely funded through listener/member supported and being accountable to them

- Local vs. global
